MOTHER'S DAY APPEAL

We know that you are a person who cares deeply about the women of the world. We thank you. Your past support and continuing interest in the women of the ROOTS Project in  Juba, South Sudan has enabled them to educate and provide life-saving heath care for their children, as well as improve their own skills and education despite many challenges.

This week ROOTS of South Sudan is launching a 3 week project in which we invite you to honor your mother, sisters, daughters, friends or women who are “mothers of the heart”.  Instead of buying a traditional gift, we ask that you consider making a tax-deductible donation in the amount of your choice to ROOTS of South Sudan.

Two years ago our Board of Directors created our first card and used a Mother’s Day theme. Something very special occurred. Women all over the world made donations; we signed and mailed cards to the honorees. Within a few weeks donors shared reactions they had received. One wrote that she had been told: "In my life this is the first time someone other than my family has said to me, 'You are special.' “Another emailed that her 90 year old neighbor told her: "I never gave birth to a child. Being called a 'mother of the heart" made me cry with happiness. THANK YOU."

This year we have prepared a card which has as its cover a black and white close-up photo of a South Sudanese mother and her child.

The inner card says: “In celebration of who you are and the lessons you have taught; with gratitude for the difference you make in the lives of others,     donor's name      has donated in your name to ROOTS of South Sudan."

The card includes a quote from Anyieth D'Awol, founder of the ROOTS Project: "Women are strong; women are determined, because the future depends on them.''   A brief description of the ROOTS Project is also included.

If you would like to celebrate special women in your life AND at the same time enable other women to change their lives and those of their children,

  • Please email the names and mailing addresses of your honorees to pammckulka@comcast.net.  Indicate the amount of your donation, and whether you will be sending a check or making a credit card donation and your phone number, in case we have a question.

  • Checks in the amount of your choice, payable to ROOTS of South Sudan, should be mailed to ROOTS of South Sudan PO Box 561 Issaquah, WA 98027-0021. Please include the names and mailing addresses of your honorees and your phone number in case we have a question. Payment by VISA or MasterCard may also be made through the "Donate" button on the HOME page at www.rootsofsouthsudan.org

  • Payment by check or credit card and names and addresses of honorees must be received by May 4.

  • After receiving a donation, a personally addressed card, including your name as the donor, will be mailed to each of your honorees between April 21 and May 5.  Please indicate if you have a preference for how you wish to be named: e.g. Jane, Mom, Gram, etc.

A few important reminders: this is our only mail/email fund-raising appeal other than in-person events. EVERY DOLLAR that is donated or raised through jewelry sales in the US directly supports the women of the ROOTS Project in South Sudan. No expenses of US marketing or administrative costs are deducted from donations and sales.  ROOTS of South Sudan is a US 501c3 non-profit and donations may be tax deductible.

As you think about how to celebrate the special women in your life, please consider the impact that your donation could make: malaria treatment for a child in South Sudan costs $30; the annual cost to a family associated with educating a child is $120; the monthly salary for a part-time adult literacy and mathematics teacher at the centre is $250.

With our very sincere thanks,

Pam and Frank McKulka,

Co-founders of ROOTS of South Sudan
