Lessons learned from a mother last a lifetime

The Roots of South Sudan initiated its annual Mother’s Day Appeal in 2013. Through this appeal, individuals have the opportunity to donate any amount in honor of their own mother or another mother figure. In recognition of the donation, a Mother’s Day card is sent to the honoree, expressing gratitude and appreciation for their role in nurturing and supporting others.

Perhaps one of humanity’s most universal truths is a woman’s commitment to the dreams of the children she loves. The Mother’s Day Appeal, regardless of geographical boundaries,  serves to connect mothers from the Roots Project with mothers anywhere, fostering a sense of solidarity and shared experience. Through this appeal, the act of mothering or being mothered becomes a unifying force, transcending cultural and societal differences.

In 2024, the Mother’s Day card campaign features a photo of Akara Ochan and her two daughters. Akara is from Ethiopia and was displaced from her home country by conflict. They live in the Gorom Refugee Camp near Juba. She has worked with the Roots Project since September, 2020. In this photo, she is with her daughters, Elizabeth, age 11 who learns the art of South Sudanese traditional beadwork and Abom, 18 months old, enjoys the comfort of her mother’s arms.

Join in the Roots of South Sudan’s Mother’s Day card campaign, to make a meaningful impact in the lives of these resilient women and their families, while you honor those who have who have shaped your life or the journey of others you love.
