Bridging Gaps, Building Diverse Communities

Connection at Roots strengthens the fabric of community, buffering hardship and creating pathways of resilience. For the women of Roots, this began naturally: beading side by side fostered friendships across South Sudan’s tribal divides. Over time, connection became intentional, between refugees and host communities, South Sudanese and fellow Africans, and from beader to wearer.

The annual Mother’s Day Appeal, launched in 2013, exemplifies this spirit. Through donations made in honor of mothers, women at the Roots Project are celebrated alongside mothers around the world, reminding us that the act of nurturing is a universal bond. Each card sent carries not only gratitude but also solidarity, connecting families across continents in recognition of women’s shared strength.

Roots Connect extends through global markets, where beadwork made by Roots women, many refugees or displaced, reaches new audiences. Whether through MADE51 partnerships, home sales, or ten years of participation at the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, every purchase becomes more than an exchange; it becomes a link between maker and wearer.

Research confirms what Roots women embody: connection improves health, resilience, and well-being. It reduces isolation, fosters empathy, and reminds us of our shared humanity. At Roots, each strand of beadwork and each shared story reflects this truth - connection is healing, empowering, and transformative. Together, we are weaving a diverse and resilient community without borders.
